Answers to the questions re Opium,
required by the Colonial Secretary,

(1.) In China, Opium has been consumed moderately by all classes (Chinese generally) from juvenile to
aged.
(2.) It cannot be ascertained the actual quantity consumed by each set; it depends upon the constitution
of consumers either more or less, and cases have been found among children.
(3). We cannot say what particular effect has been brought on consumers by opium physically, morally or
socially. But it may be pronounced that its moderate use strengthens the body of consumers and refreshes the brain.
We may say that some have been ruined by the excessive use of opium. Its extreme use perhaps brings destruction, but in China, we have not heard such a case as this due to moderate use of opium.
(4) In China, natives never consume raw opium; they boil the drug to a certain extent through a process and then smoke it in the fashion in vogue for years past. Other Asiatic nations...
